Founded in 1969 by visionary composer and keyboardist Florian Fricke, Popol Vuh were one of German rock’s most pioneering groups. Emerging from the so-called Krautrock/Kosmische Musik scene, they were among the first German bands to use a Moog synthesizer, shaping early works like Affenstunde (1970) and In den Gärten Pharaos(1971) with groundbreaking electronic experimentation. Their music blended synthesizers with rock, world and ethnic influences, creating meditative soundscapes that anticipated ambient music and laid the groundwork for genres such as ambient and trance. Popol Vuh forged a unique musical language that continues to resonate far beyond its era. A landmark reissue series begins in earnest next year, celebrating their phenomenal output.
