Summer Into Fall
The Fall – Can Can Summer
Mark E. Smith’s group were called many things over their forty years in the business, but “polished” and “funky” were not ordinarily the words. This is why Can Can Summer from their 2008 studio album Imperial Wax Solvent is such an astonishing track for a band John Peel described as “always different, always the same.”
The track rollicks with the trademark rhythmic repetition, but this is slick twentieth century post-punk, well written, tight and the opposite of their more loose and shambolic incarnations. The song features Smith’s characteristically cryptic lyrics and guttural utterings which work well in contrast with Elena Poulou’s crystal clear backing vocals. The legend goes Can Can Summer is Smith’s ode to his favourite group, the German experimental band Can.
