Goodbye Yellow Rid Road

New BBC One period drama Ridley Road, based on Jo Bloom’s novel of the same name, is set in the Swinging Sixties.

A soundtrack of songs from the period help form the backdrop to the series, which follows Agnes O’Casey as lead character Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish woman who goes undercover to infiltrate the National Socialist Movement (NSM), a real-life neo-Nazi group set up by Colin Jordan (Rory Kinnear in the Ridley Road cast).

Cherry Red are well-represented on the soundtrack, with tracks ‘To Be Loved‘ (Ronnie Carrol), ‘Sweet Dreams’ (Dave Sampson) and ‘Top Teen Baby’ (Gary Mills) all making an appearance during the series. Ridley Road premiered on BBC One on Sunday 3rd October.

Noosha Fox and friends injected some sophisticated glamour into the UK charts of the mid-1970s. Fox‘s ‘Only You Can’ peaked at No. 3 while ‘S-S-S Single Bed‘ peaked one place lower. ‘If I Point At The Moon’, taken from their 1975 self-titled album, is a lilting, sublime pop ditty that sounds remarkably timeless. The song is featured in the US drama mini-series A Friend Of The Family, which aired recently on the Peacock network.
