Cookin’ With The Crew

Cookin’ With The Crew

Cookie Crew were an all female British hip hop music duo consisting of Cookie Pryce (MC Remedee) and Susie Banfield (Suzy Q) from South London between 1983 and 1992. Their career took off after winning a national rap championship and recording two sessions for the John Peel BBC Radio 1 show. They gained a recording contract from the UK dance record label Rhythm King and were put in the studio with the production trio Beatmasters, who pointed them in a house music direction. They had a string of UK hits including ‘Rok da House,’ ‘Born This Way (Let’s Dance),’ ‘Got To Keep On’ (with Edwin Starr) and ‘Come and Get Some.’ The track we’ve chosen today is their second single ‘Females;’ released in 1987 and featured on the TV series No Limits. It also became a Top 5 hit in the UK Singles Chart and is one of the earliest examples of hip house – a genre that mixed house music and hip hop. In July we will release the first career overview of the group as Pick Up On This – 1987-1992; a 4CD overview of Britain’s most celebrated female rap act. Drop us a line if you’d like to know more.
