A Fine Listen

A Fine Listen

Written by English poet and musician Edward Barton, ‘It’s A Fine Day’ is an a cappella classic performed by Jane (Lancaster) back in 1983. A limited-edition 7” was supported by John Peel before being picked up by Cherry Red and released more widely, later that year. The single peaked at No. 5 on the Independent Chart and appeared on Jane and Barton’s eponymous mini-album. Later, ‘It’s A Fine Day’ was reworked as an international hit for Opus III in 1992 for PWL and has also been sampled and covered by Orbital and A Guy Called Gerald, amongst others. Most recently, the BBC have used the song in a new drama series called The Listeners – based on the novel by Jordan Tannahill about a English teacher who begins to hear a low hum that only a select few can perceive.
